There's always something fun happening at the Historic Holly Theatre, and the movie showing this weekend is The Women, starring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Jada Pinkett Smith, among others. It is "a smart, sparkling comedy about contemporary womanhood and the power of female relationships."
Into the Woods, based on a book by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, comes to the Holly on October 24. It's the story of an ambivalent Cinderella, a blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood, a Prince Charming with a roving eye and a Witch..who raps.
When a baker and his wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack. Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of "The Princess Bride" becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children.
Sponsored by Hummingbird Lane & Achasta, Into the Woods opens October 24 and runs through November 9. Order tickets online at www.hollytheater.com or call the box office at (706) 864-3759.
