The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce asks that citizens please read this email from Kim Turner at Appalachian Community Bank regarding a phone scam.
"I got a phone call today from a guy that said he was selling advertising for the high school. He said his name was Chris with Elite Designs. They were selling business card sized ads to go on a 'high gloss' poster that would have the football schedule on it for this next year. He went on to say that they were sent to print, or the company was out of, Arlington, TX. He was telling me about the ads saying, 'yeah, we’ll have Gilmer County Bank on there for ya.' We are part of Gilmer County Bank, and I figured if this was for the school they would know that we are Appalachian Community in other areas. So, I called Coach Lee at the high school, and he told me that it was a definite scam. He said that this happened last year, and some actually gave money to this company. This also happened last year in Ellijay, with this same Elite Designs company. The local news paper had an article on scams, and this company’s name was mentioned. It happened before football season.
Just be careful. He even told me the colors of our football team. He won’t leave a message or a call back number, but if you have caller ID, Elite Designs will come up on the phone. I just want everyone to be aware, and get this message out as soon as possible so others don’t get scammed."
Thanks,
Kim Turner
